Hey I was wondering are the links broken for the audio or is my computer just being weird? I can't seem to play the audios. I really want to listen to them to hear the difference between the mics.

What really stands out here to me is how little I liked the Beta58! In the other test the shure sounded "better" to my ears - in that it colored the sound in a more attractive way. I listened to these with out looking at the notes that disclosed which tracks were which mic.

I own a 57, and have only used it for close mic'ing guitar (Marshall DSL201)

Thanks for this. It cuts this vibrant discussion to the chase using audio examples instead of glowing words about "how good the ES mics are for the price" or "not in the same league" or "better or equal to the Shure products."

Sure, a $30 mic is cheap, but I think the audio examples demonstrate (to me at least) that the ES and Shure products are just "different" form each other, not interchangeable. Both have their own sonic characteristics, so it would be up to the engineer to choose which mic to use on different applications.

Thanks again. It's making my choice easier.

It almost sounds as if the Strat is being switched from the neck (sm57) to the bridge (es-57) on the distorted track. That's assuming it's a standard three single coil strat. I think the ES would make for a track that would really cut through a muddy mix. If I heard the mics in a full mix, then I would be able to seriously consider whether or not to purchase the ES-57.

Also, I was surprised by the Beta58a's sound. I really liked it; very defined highs. The SM58 and Beta were both above the ES, but if I were to use a mic such as these for vocals only, particularly public announcement or VO work, I'd use the Beta.
